Bhongir Fort - Telangana

An extremely beautiful fort ruled by Chalukyas, formally known as Bhuvanagiri. The highlight of this fort is that it was constructed on an enormous egg shaped rock. If you want to enjoy the scenic beauty of the city, you need not be prepared to climb all the way to the top. A few steps will do the trick. Although, quite obviously, the view from the top is mesmerizing as it is situated at a commanding height.

We paid a visit to the fort on 14th January. The weather that day was having mood swings. We were grateful about it because even though it was a sunny day, it was breezy and foggy. Even in the 10th century, the rainwater harvesting system was implemented. Today, there is a small pond bearing white lotuses there.

Half way up, there is a view point. You can easily spot rice fields, a lake as well as the highway. Turn 180 degree and notice the sheet of shelters of human kind. I had two views to choose from. I obviously chose the former one.

We were glad and thankful for the heavy breakfast that morning. The second half trek towards the top of the rock is trickier than the first half. The first half does have well carved and distinguished steps while the second half misses this advantage. Although, there is a railing all the way to the top. Since I visited with my family, I was sure that this railing will make the task of climbing easier for my parents.

After climbing for about 500 feet above the ground, we stood at the top of the massive rock, looking at the beautiful fort. Bhongir fort is small as compared to the other forts I have been to. However, there was something about it that touched the inner me. It was alluring in its own way. There was nothing too fancy, but standing there, considering the trek, the view, the air-stream, everything gave me goosebumps. I assumed that I was tired to drive away the emotional attachment. What really caught my eye at that particular moment was a plant, trying to grow, all by itself, on the wall of the fort. Looking at it, I thought about all the excuses I gave in my life. Maybe they were just a catalyst - trying to help me get away from every situation as quick as possible.

We explored the usual elements like wells, steep and high staircase, an underground tunnel, etc. I have heard that this tunnel connects to Golkonda fort. Well, Golconda is 140 km from here. So, I doubt it. The crowd there, umm, well I didn't notice them. I guess the crowd was decent.

That's the fact about travelling with parents - you feel safe. What I did notice is, it is an awesome place for photographers, well, at least beginners like me.

There is a rock climbing school right at the base of the rock, as featured in the movie 'Poorna'. We hoped to do rock climbing. I was excited because it was almost seven years since I've experienced this sport. Unfortunately, the school was closed that day. There are facilities like washrooms(inside the gates) and small shops right outside the ticketing counter. Apart from these three shops, you won't find a restaurant nearby. Make sure that you satisfy your stomach before entering and do carry water.

Everything about this fort is attractive, not just for us but also for the birds. Looking at one of them, sitting on the top of the fort, gazing the world, I was jealous. When you visit this fort, (or any other for that matter) make sure you give it a moment and you feel a feeling. I don't have a name for it yet because sometimes words are not enough.

Words are never enough.
